What Is The Difference Between an Open, Closed, and Semi-Open Adoption?

A birth mother doesn’t choose adoption because she wants to “give her child up.” She chooses this path because she wants

An Open Adoption allows you to have the option of seeing the child again in the future.

A Semi-Open Adoption means that you may meet the family, but there are certain limitations. All ongoing contact will be handled through the adoption agency. If you’d like, the adoptive family will send pictures and letters to keep you updated. In this option, the birth mother can also send letters, gifts, and photos.

A Closed Adoption means you have the option of having no contact after the child is placed. If you wish to choose the adoptive family, you can. You are not required to do so.
