Choosing The Right Adoptive Family For Your Child

May 22, 2020

Are you ready to make an adoption plan for your child? There are a lot of important decisions ahead of you, and we know it can feel a little daunting. Choosing the right adoptive family for your child can bring a lot of different emotions. It can also bring back a lot of memories of your own childhood.

All of our families have been through an in-depth series of interviews, and we wholeheartedly recommend each and every couple on our list. There are so many amazing families ready to adopt, and we want you to feel comfortable with your choice when you’re making an adoption plan for your child.

We think it’s important to give every birth mother a voice and the opportunity to ask questions and even interview the couple yourself (if you’d like to!). As you start to make your adoption plan, here are three things to think about.

Make a List of Different Attributes

What do you think makes an excellent parent? Think about some of the qualities you would like to see in the parents of your unborn child. A lot of birth mothers imagine a family that is patient, kind, and likes to have fun together. Some birth mothers are looking for parents who are very creative and artistic while another birth mother might be looking for a family who enjoys playing sports together. While both of these attributes are wonderful, some birth mothers find themselves looking for something very specific in an adoptive family. When you read through some of our adoptive family profiles, you might find a certain quality that jumps out at you. Pay attention to that, and add it to your list of attributes!

Think About Values

Everyone has different experiences in their childhood. These experiences help us to develop our values. Some birth mothers would like their child to grow up in a rural area. Others would like their child to grow up closer to the city. A different birth mother might believe that it’s important for her child to enter a family with siblings. It’s important to think about these different values. If you’re having trouble deciding, we recommend processing through this with someone you trust. Our care team is always available to help you make decisions throughout the entire process!

Get To Know Your Options

At New Beginnings Adoptions, we have an entire page on our website that is designed to help birth mothers find the best adoptive family for their unborn child. You can browse through the profiles of our ‘waiting families’ and learn more about them. You can learn how they met, what kind of area they live in, and hear about the things that are most important to them. Many women read through these profiles and feel a certain connection to a couple.

If choosing an adoptive family for your child is something that you’re not comfortable with, we completely understand. We are more than happy to choose a family from our list. As a birth mother, you have rights. We want to make sure that you know your rights and help you through this entire process.
