In late February, Chairman Camp of the Ways and Means Committee released his proposal for the tax reform, which eliminates the Adoption Tax Credit (ATC). As you can imagine (and as many of you probably feel), we are very concerned about the effect of this change regarding adoption. The removal of the adoption tax credit would be devastating for so many families hoping to adopt, as well as those who already have adopted.
Due to the high cost of adoption, I have personally seen financial relief delivered to so many families through the ATC, often making it possible to provide children with loving, permanent homes. Without the ATC, many families would not have been able to adopt, and many children would be left as orphans.
We need YOUR help to make sure the Adoption Tax Credit is available for adoptive families in the future.
Please contact your legislators, including the two senators and the representative of your district. This is the only way to protect the ATC. Your senators and representatives are there to represent you, the people of their district. We need at least 20 constituents (that’s you) to contact each legislator about this issue.
Write to them through email or the forms on their websites. Include personal testimonies about why adoption and the ATC are so important. Most importantly, ask them to co-sponsor H.R. 2144/S.1056, which will make the ATC a refundable tax credit.
As the bill stands right now, it is a non-refundable tax credit, and that means anyone at or below 200% of the poverty line cannot receive that tax credit. One-third of adoptive families fall into this category.
Mississippi’s senators are Roger Wicker and Thad Cochran. The representatives include Alan Nunnelee (1st District), Bennie Thompson (2nd District), Gregg Harper (3rd District), and Steven Palazzo (4th District).
Please share this with your friends and family members, both in Mississippi and other states. Also share this blog post through social media. They can find contact information for their senators and representatives at senate.gov and house.gov. The more co-sponsors this bill has, the better chance we have of saving the ATC.
We ask for that you fight for all of the children and families who use this tax credit. Contact your legislators today. For more information, contact us at 662-842-6752.
