5 Ways to Find Peace After Adoption

March 25, 2022

If you’re ready to make an adoption plan, you might have a lot of different thoughts and emotions running through your head. This road isn’t an easy one, but there are ways to help find peace after adoption. There are resources for birth mothers so that every woman can have the support she needs during this journey. We put together a guide below to help you find peace in your circumstances.

Find a Strong Support System

It’s important for every birth mother to have stable, supportive relationships in her life. We know not everyone will support your decision, and it’s challenging to walk through relationships that don’t understand what you are going through. Every birth mother deserves to be treated with dignity and respect before, during, and after the adoption process.  What does the best kind of support system look like? Connect with other birth mothers who have already walked in your shoes!

Try Writing Out Your Feelings

Sometimes writing out your thoughts can be a powerful tool to express your emotions. When we bottle things inside, they often resurface months or even years later. Dedicate a specific journal to write your thoughts and feelings during this journey. When you feel that you are in a good place, it might even be helpful to look back in the future and see how far you have come!

Talk With a Trusted Counselor

So many birth mothers have benefitted from working with a trusted counselor. It’s important to find a counselor who makes you feel like you can be open and honest about what you’re feeling. A counselor can listen, understand, and help you move forward with the emotions you are experiencing. They also listen without judgment. If you’re looking for support on your journey, our team can connect you with the right resources!

Consider Your Expectations

It’s important to know that the road ahead will come with ups and downs. There will be paperwork, doctor appointments, and hard conversations ahead. Many birth mothers experience feelings like grief, loss, and confusion – even when they know they made the right decision. Even though these feelings are normal, it doesn’t make them any easier to navigate. Every birth mother should know that there will be hard days, but they won’t last forever.

Give Yourself Grace

After a big event like giving birth, it’s normal to feel a lot of different emotions. Some days you might feel overwhelmed by all of your feelings. This is a normal part of the birth mother experience, but some birth mothers begin to question their decisions. It takes some time to process through your emotions – this is a big, important event in your life.  Give yourself a lot of grace during this time period. You have been through so much!
